Is it normal to feel uncomfortable when you learn how to hold a guitar?

Is there anything that can make a difference, like the kind of chair? I've been playing the guitar on and off for years and I had professional lessons in my youth, but I do not think that the teacher always taught me to keep it as properly. I've only recently that I have a much easier form, the chords with your left hand if I hold the neck up to higher, at an angle. The problem is Now that my back hurts a bit when I play!
